Keep it Cool
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ - Summer is here and temperatures are rising.
Instead of using your AC and racking up electric bills, use the following tricks:
// Focus on the temperature in your body, not your house.
If our ancestors survived without air conditioning, so can we. From sipping tasty iced drinks to applying a cold cloth to strong-pulsed areas like your neck and wrists, cooling yourself from the inside out is not a bad idea. My friends told me that he had informed his wife that they wouldn’t be cuddling until the leaves start changing color. Cute, but not recommended.
// Keep your blinds closed.
You might be surprised, but 30 percent of unwanted heat comes from your windows, and utilizing shades, curtains and the like can save you up to 7 percent on your bills and lower indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees. Avoid creating a greenhouse in your own home, and close those shades!
// Use a fan instead of the AC.
Fill a mixing bowl with ice or ice packs and position it at an angle in front of a large fan, so that the air whips off the ice at an extra-chilled, extra-misty temperature. Works every time!
// Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise.
Your ceiling fan needs to be adjusted seasonally. Set counter-clockwise in the summer at a higher speed. The fan will create a wind-chill breeze effect.
// Heat-proof your bed.
Put a cool-inducing Chillow under your head while you sleep. For your feet, fill this hot water bottle you received and never used and put it in the freezer before placing at the foot of your bed. You can also slightly dampen your sheets before bedtime. Get ready to chill out.
