A Bomb Threat against the JCC – But Who is Behind It?
WEST ORANGE, NJ – Recent bomb threats against Jewish centers around the country have not skipped the peaceful center in West Orange. A phone call threatening to bomb the local Jewish community center was received yesterday afternoon and sent a wave of shock among employees.
“I have worked here for over 20 years,” said one employee to The Essex Times, “I have never experienced something like that”. “My wife asked me to stay home today,” said another employee of 10 years, “but I do not want to give those people what they want – make us scared”.
Anti-Semitism of this nature should not and must not be allowed to endure in our communities,” said the director of strategic performance at JCC Association of North America, David Posner, in a press release. “The Justice Department, Homeland Security, the FBI and the White House, alongside Congress and local officials, must speak out — and speak out forcefully — against this scourge of anti-Semitism impacting communities across the country.”
“Actions speak louder than words. Members of our community must see swift and concerted action from federal officials to identify and capture the perpetrator or perpetrators who are trying to instill anxiety and fear in our communities,” Posner continued. “We remain grateful to local law enforcement who continue to serve our communities and ensure that our JCCs and schools remain safe and open for business as the vital community institutions they are.”
It is not clear who stands behind the phone call. Some residents who spoke with The Essex Times speculated that Islamic organizations, feeling stressed under the Trump administration, are behind this new wave of anti-Jewish sentiment. “Muslims feel that there is some sort of government conspiracy because Trump banned Muslims from coming into the US, and it is known that Trump’s daughter and son-in-law are Jewish” said Donna Weiss, a local resident. “I strongly believe that this is how Muslims are now trying to get back at the Jews after they were banned from the US”, said another resident, “but we should not tolerate these kind of acts in our country. There is a good reason why Muslims were banned. We need to keep our country safe”.
